365 days… to travel

Each year starts with a blank page, and you have 365 days ahead of you to fill with plans and trips. Travelling is one of life’s greatest pleasures but it nearly always depends on your budget. Fortunately, there are still some attractive destinations that you can enjoy for very little. Would you like to know which ones?

Lyon

An architectural treasure registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and full of historical landmarks. It’s the second largest city in France and also known as ‘The Silk City’. Experience more than 2000 years of history with a walk through the city’s streets, Vieux Lyon is especially interesting and one of Europe’s largest Renaissance neighbourhoods, as are the two Roman amphitheatres, which host concerts regularly. The city boasts a rich cultural and artistic culture, and the university gives it a young student vibe.

Croatia

It’s the perfect country to discover in a week, not too big and not too small and very affordable prices. Its capital Zagreb is a case in point. Accommodation in a three-star central hotel costs about €60 per night for a double room, or if you go for an apartment (currently increasing in popularity), the price could drop to as low as €30. Another city worth visiting is Dubrovnik, which has made an impressive recovery from the war suffered in the early 1990s, and its old town possesses a unique charm.

Lisbon

The first advantage is obvious. It’s so close you can drive, or you can find return flights for around €50. Once you’re in Lisbon, most of the tourist attractions can be visited for very little money, and quite a few are free. One example is the tram that passes through the old town and then takes you up to the Bairro Alto (Upper Quarter) of the city for a little more than €1. We recommend finding a bar away from the tourist areas to eat as prices are lower and the quality is much better. You’ll eat like a king for less than €10.

Budapest

A typical yet must-visit destination just like Vienna and Prague, and although all three are cities that receive a huge amount of tourists it’s not difficult to find reasonable prices. Budapest offers plenty to do and see for very little money.  If you choose one of the public transport ferries, you can take a trip along the Danube for €3 while a thermal bath like those in the popular Széchenyi Medical Baths will set you back less than €17. Set menus in the city centre cost less than €10 and the funicular up to the Buda Castle to enjoy the spectacular views of the city are other of city’s low-cost attractions.

As you see money is no longer an excuse to get away once in a while, so make sure to travel more in 2018!
