AENA applies new incentives to boost air traffic

-Discounts for setting up new routes and increasing the number of flights on existing routes

Improve the network’s airports competitiveness

450 new routes were opened in 2016

Aena has announced that from this April it’s starting a new commercial incentive to airline companies, which it hopes will have a positive effect on demand and encourage them to set up new routes and strengthen existing ones.

Two seasons are contemplated in 2017: summer (April 1st to October 31st) and winter (November 1st to March 31st).

The new measure establishes two incentive types:

-Incentives for routes to a new destination. They will be applied to all the airports in the AENA network and will have 75% discount on outgoing passenger rates during the first season the company flies the route. In the following season, AENA will give 25% discount if the airline maintains at least the number of outgoing passengers on the route.

-Incentives for growth on established routes. Two segment types are included in this incentive: one is the airports with less than three million passengers a year, and the other is long-haul routes (more than 4000km) at all the AENA airports.

It will also apply a discount to airports showing seasonality among those in the Balearics, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla (this category currently only includes the Balearic Islands). A 5% discount in the passenger duty to additional passengers on each route during the winter season in 2017, and an additional 5% if the company maintains at least the same number of passengers on the route in the 2018 winter season.
