JUNEAU, an unusual capital

JUNEAU, an unusual capital

Alaska’s curiosities appear to go one further when we think of the capital Juneau, which, however impossible it may seem, cannot be reached by land. Yes, it’s true – the capital of the largest state in the US is located in a remote area that can only be reached by plane or boat.

Discovering Alaska’s remote capital, Juneau, is relatively easy as it only has 75km of roads and both sides lead to a dead end. The city is charming and appeals to tourists for its architecture as much as for its location, spreading from the snowy mountains to the frozen sea.

The coastal mountains push Juneau close to the sea, and not too far from the city will you find the deeply-rooted Mendenhall glacier, melting its improvised iceberg sculptures into the curved lake that shares its name.

The Mendenhall River sweeps these errant and ephemeral glacial vestiges to the ocean before they melt on the journey. Nature, in all its varied guises, completes the beauty of this fascinating and charming spot, still unfamiliar to a large part of the world.

Every experience on a trip across the Land of the Midnight Sun is an experience apart. Alaska is an unimaginable space, best described as a giant piece of land covered by ice and surrounded by beauty that attracts millions of people to its treasures and natural splendour.

Alaska ticks all the boxes, from adventure sports, climbing glaciers, hiking and camping to luxury cruises. But, no matter what visitors choose, Alaska means more than anything else the freedom that its incredible ecosystem represents.

The Last Frontier is the perfect description of a place which is unique in today’s world for being somewhere one can still have a real adventure among the mountains, forests, and lakes of this beautiful land.
