Christmas in Jordan: religion, aventure & disconnect

Enjoy Christmas markets, biblical places and relaxing and centuries-old experiences in Jordan this Christmas

Christmas is a very important date in Jordan, and as a country marked by history and religious tradition, these days are celebrated with intensity. Many of the celebrations revolve around events depicted in the Bible, so Jordan is an ideal destination for those interested in history and religion. History, culture and beauty are three more than good enough reasons to visit Jordan. However, the country offers a host of other activities and interesting options aimed at other publics.

If you’re thinking about heading away this Christmas, then Jordan is the ideal option. Here, we bring you some of the events taking place over the Christmas period that will make your visit to the jewel of the Middle East unforgettable.

Amman

In the capital city, Amman, the big hotels open their doors to the traditional Christmas markets featuring artisan products, home accessories, traditional sweets and many more items. The city is spruced up with Christmas lights and decorations, the squares are filled with Christmas trees, and the streets breathe the loveliest spirit of this joyous date. Christmas takes on a very special meaning in Fuheis, just 15km from Amman, as the town has the largest Christian community in all of Jordan.

Bethany

This is where John the Baptist preached, and Jesus is believed to have been baptised. Bethany is not to be missed for those lucky enough to visit the area on such an important date. A truly unique experience. Located just nine kilometres north of the Dead Sea and on the banks on the River Jordan, the area is also home to some Roman and Byzantine ruins.

Mount Nebo and Madaba

Thirty kilometres from Amman we have the city of Madaba, which is famous for its mosaics depicting towns, hills, valleys and cities in the region. Another of Jordan’s main biblical points which is also close to Madaba is Mount Nebo. According to Christian tradition, Moses was buried here. The Brazen Serpent monument is perched on the summit and is symbolic of the bronze serpent created by Moses and the cross on which Jesus was crucified.

The Syagha Church is also located there and every year a mass is held there in both English and Arabic at Christmas. Experiencing a religious ceremony in such a sacred place on Christmas Day is an awe-inspiring and memorable experience.

Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is the lowest elevation point on the planet at more than 400m below sea level. Its warm water contains ten times more salt than any of the other seas, making it a unique natural setting. The therapeutic and healing properties of its water and black mud are known all over the world, and many people visit the Dead Sea to treat circulatory or skin problems like dermatitis, psoriasis or arthritis.

You’ll feel like King Herod or Cleopatra floating in its waters and spending a few days relaxing and disconnecting at the hotels in and around the Dead Sea. A great way to enjoy a different Christmas.

Wadi Rum Desert

A great adventure awaits you in Wadi Rum. Its landscapes of enormous rock formations provide the perfect setting for climbing, and the extensive reddish terrain is ideal for long walks to discover its canyons and hidden treasures. Renting a vehicle with a guide or visiting the most popular spots on a camel tour are other options available.

Wadi Rum is also known as the Valley of the Moon as the desert’s stunning landscape is the perfect spot to sleep under the stars in an authentic Bedouin camp and enjoy traditional food and Arabic music. A few magical days to remember.

Petra by Night

The crown jewel of the country is one of the most eagerly awaited visits by all when travelling to Jordan. A visit to Petra and the awe of seeing the impressive Al Khazneh first-hand is an experience that’s almost impossible to put into words. And if you have the chance to visit Petra by Night, the feeling is intensified even more. After the explanation from a local guide, you sit on rugs, enjoy a delicious Jordanian tea, and experience the ancient rock city lit up by hundreds of candles with spectacular views.

Jordan, an oasis of peace in the Middle East

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan surprises travellers as it’s a modern, dynamic, stable and totally safe nation. From the evocative and ancient steppes of Wadi Rum to the thriving centre of Amman, from the majestic ruins of ancient civilisations to the timeless splendour of the Dead Sea, Jordan is a unique destination with impressive and mysterious places, high-level accommodation, exquisite cuisine and countless activities to inspire, motivate and rejuvenate visitors.
