Flower festivals in Japan

More than 800,000 shibazakuras, a type of moss, cover the ground at the foot of Mount Fuji in pink tones from April 23 to May 30.

The Wisteria Festival in Ashikaga Flower Park takes place from mid-April to end-May.

Thanks to the cherry blossom, springtime is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Japan, but beyond the sakura (cherry blossom), there are also other flower festivals to enjoy the flowering spectacle.

Fuji Shibazakura Festival

From April 23 to May 30, the base of Mount Fuji is covered in a pink blanket of 800,000 of “cherry grass” plants, which take their name because of their resemblance to cherry blossom flowers.

Actually, it’s a special type of moss called Shibazakura. Special dishes are also prepared for the occasion during the festival.

The festival is held in a park, and the cost of entry is about €6 for adults, while children can enter for less than €2.

Wisteria Festival in Ashikaga Flower Park

This flower theme park in the city of Ashikaga in Tochigi Prefecture celebrates the flowering of the plant from mid-April to mid-May.

The park is one of the most spectacular places in Japan to admire the wisteria flowering and even features an 80m long wisteria tunnel.

Due to the way the flowers grow, they cascade to form a unique spectacle of purple, pink and green colours. You can also enjoy other types of flora in this park all year round. Tickets start at €7 for adults and cost about €4 for children in April and May.
