The best restaurants for eating chiles en nogada in Mexico City

Chiles en Nogada is a typical Mexican dish, which you can enjoy from July until September in various restaurants in Mexico City.

Legend has it that the Mexican dish Chiles en Nogada was originally made by Augustinian nuns in Puebla, first crafting the recipe in 1821 for Agustín de Iturbide and his Army of the Three Guarantees.

This dish soon became an authentic Mexican tradition, which can only be enjoyed between July and September because of the seasonality of its component ingredients.

Below you will find a list of places where you can try the best versions of this delicious and authentic Mexican dish.

Azul Condesa

This dish is one of the favourite meals of famous chef Ricardo Muñoz Zurita, head chef in this fantastic restaurant. The chilis come in various shapes and sizes, depending on the season. Your options include Atlixco Chiles en Nogada, which are stuffed with a very fruity minced pork; Coxcatlán Chiles en Nogada, which are stuffed with shredded meat; and the classic variety, which is stuffed with beef. With regards to the sauce poured over the chilis, you can choose between three types of nogada: sweet, savoury or mixed. The chef recommends pairing it with champagne.

Hacienda de Los Morales

Since this restaurant first opened its doors in 1967, it has been one of the city’s finest restaurants serving typical Mexican cuisine. Chiles en Nogada is a staple of its extensive menu, with the recipe devised by renowned chef Rodrigo Flores. It is a particularly fun dish, with an unusual flavour of ground bay leaves and chilis stuffed with peaches smothered in honey.

El Cardenal

The Cardenal is a classic restaurant located in the centre of Mexico City. From July 23, you’ll be able to sample its delicious Chiles en Nogada.

The variety served in this restaurant is notable for the generous helping of nogada sauce, in which the chilis bathe, and their sweet (but not sickly) filling.

Angelopolitano

This restaurant is found on Calle Puebla in the Roma neighbourhood. This restaurant’s chef takes the culinary traditions of the state in which this recipe was created very seriously. Here, Chiles en Nogada ia considered as a tribute to Mexican cuisine. This dish strikes the perfect balance between the sweetness of the nogada sauce and the pomegranate and the spice of the chilis.

JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City

Within this large luxury hotel lies the Xanat restaurant, with a menu rooted in Mexican cuisine devised by executive chef Jennifer López. This chef’s recipe is different yet somewhat authentic, as the Chile en Nogada is wrapped in a puff pastry. This dish is best served with pink champagne alongside a bowl of pine nuts. You can try this dish for yourself until 30 September. Don’t miss out!

We have highlighted these restaurants due to the fantastic ways in which they serve this quintessentially Mexican dish, which even include the colours of the Mexican flag in their presentation.
